When you know the basics when it comes to men's fashion, getting dressed and looking your fashion best can be easy and effortless.

Always remember that certain patterns can flatter you or can be unflattering for your image. Wide and horizontal stripes can create a sort of broadening effect. On the other hand, vertical stripes create a thinner image or look. Fabrics with no patterns or with small patterns can give emphasis to being thin.

When it comes to fabric, bear in mind that bulky sweaters, flannel, tweed and other heavy fabrics create the impression of a heavy body. Cotton, linen, twill and other light to medium weight textiles create a slimming effect and can visually take off pounds from your look.

If you want to look taller and thinner, wear clothes that fit just right. Wearing clothes that are either too loose or too tight can add pounds to your look. Solid colors would work best for a thinner and taller effect. Your colors from head to toe should preferably be in the same color range or family. Stiff fabrics should be avoided. Stripes should be limited to those designs which are fine or close together. Do not wear suspenders with button clips but instead opt for the button loops. Avoid busy and outrageous patterns and go for vertical stripes. Opt for dark tones and smooth fabrics. Trousers should be worn on the natural waist area and not below it. Your tie's width should be medium and its tip should touch the waistband. Jackets and sweaters with elastic bottoms should be avoided as this can create a heavy look. Minimize accessories.

If you want to look heavier and shorter, wear bold colors and mix and match separates with contrasting colors. Jackets and sweaters with elastic bottoms can make the fabric bunch up on the waist area to give you a heavy look. Limit the usage of vertical stripes that are narrow, pointed lapels and very narrow ties. Wear those with styling details or patch pockets. Layer your clothes. Choose a top coat made of huskier material. As much as possible limit the use of a single color from head to foot and trousers in deep pleats should be worn.

Always remember that what's important in finding the right clothes is not your fashion sense or style, rather it is being aware of your body type and knowing which types of clothes, styles and designs will best complement it.

I earn my living from the fashion industry, and as such, I have gotten pretty good at tuning out the fashion doubters.

You know the type - if it's menswear then they dismiss trends with a simple "it looks a bit gay" and if womenswear happens to be their target du jour then they hit you with the alternating "makes your legs look fat"/"it clings in the wrong places".

I hate to say it, but when it comes to current fashion, it looks like they might have got one right. Never mind just the doubters, women up and down the country have been more than a little discontented by the current trend for sack and tunic dresses.

The problem is that teamed with leggings as per the current vogue, you're left with a look that isn't actually all that flattering.

There is no doubt that tunic dresses make you look stocky and sack dresses make you look pregnant, but then to combine it with a garment such as leggings that frankly, only the sveltest of dance students can carry off, is just asking for trouble.

That said, it doesn't matter. Because once a look has caught on, then you have the fashion equivalent of a level playing field. If your leggings make your calf muscles look like Thierry Henry's then chances are they do the same to the woman next to you.

For that brief moment in time when an item (no matter how unflattering) is considered unquestionably "on-trend" then normal considerations are cast aside.

This level playing field theory is an example of what psychologists call groupthink. It's basically where we cast aside what we know to be good for us in order to conform to mass consensus.

I admit, the bulk of such research has tended to be focussed on considerations such as Hitlers rise to power or football hooliganism, rather than the fact that the empire line makes you look pregnant. But still the parallel is there.

Right now, it's a look literally everyone is sporting, and as such everyone looks like they are just entering their second trimester! Case in point, at a recent focus group for Queen of Suburbia, I overheard a collection of trendy young things comparing with ill-concealed pride, the number of people who had asked them the dreaded when's it due question that week.

The subtext is clear. If people aren't offering you their seat on the bus/tube/metro then you just aren't fashionable enough!

When people think of Halloween they think fancy dress costumes, trick or treating, pumpkins and ghost stories. Just like any other holiday that we celebrate the true meaning has been forgotten and most people don't even know how these traditions started.

Halloween is one of the most fun customs celebrated around the world. For children it's all about dressing up and getting as many sweets as possible and for adults it's all about dressing up and having a drink or two. Note the common occurrence is dressing up - a practice that is hundreds of years old and is still performed to this day. What is it about fancy dress costumes that gets everyone so excited and why do we actually dress up on Halloween?

The word Halloween derives from the term "All Hallows Eve" which occurred the night before All Hallows Day and was a Roman Catholic holiday that celebrated the saints. However, even before people started celebrating All Hallows Day, the Celtic Irish celebrated the 31st October as the New Year. It was believed that on the eve of this day the spirits of the recently deceased would re - enter the bodies of the living for a chance of an afterlife.

Naturally scared and fearing for their souls, the Celts would turn off all the lights in their houses, dress up in scary costumes and cause mayhem in the town in an attempt to scare the spirits away. This theory was so popular that the Roman Catholics later adopted these practices as their own making them even more popular and widespread. However, over the years spirit possession became less popular and people started dressing up as witches, goblins and demons in a more ceremonial manner.

It is a common misconception that Halloween is an American holiday. However, traditions such as fancy dress costumes and ghosts weren't introduced in America until the famous potato famine which hit Ireland in the 1840s. Desperately seeking refuge many Irish residents fled to America taking their Halloween celebrations with them.

Even though people now celebrate Halloween very differently to how they did many centuries ago, people all over the world still dress up in fancy dress costumes at Halloween today. Many believe that dressing up is a tribute to the devil when in fact the exact opposite is the case as it was originally started as an attempt to save peoples' souls from demons and to celebrate the saints.
